In spring the clocks go forward, while in autumn they go back. Employees who work an hour less or more because they are working a night shift or at night when the clocks go back or forward are not automatically entitled to an extra hour's pay or an hour less unless it is provided for in their contract.
In this context employers should check the wording for “a shift” as defined in their contracts of employment and hence eliminate any confusion for employees and reduce the number of queries relating to Payroll Matters in Ireland. For example, a shift could be described as lasting "x no of hours" or it could be "from a start time to an end time". Whatever approach the employer takes, it should ensure that employees are aware of how the extra hour, or the hour less will be treated.
Ireland, and the rest of the EU countries, were supposed to cease with the change of clocks, but due to complications with both Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic it has been delayed.
